Iron Overload Awareness in Sickle Cell Disease

July 2011 Ebony magazine shared an article that appealed to my eyes since I have a friend whose son was born with sickle cell disease.  The article stated that Doctors are warning that having too many blood transfusions can lead to too much iron in the body, and may cause liver damage and even heart failure.  There is a growing concern for patients with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) that iron levels should not be over 1000 mcg/L because this can put you in a danger zone.  Talk to your doctor about receiving  serum ferritin tests so that you can routinely monitor your iron levels.

RAISING AWARENESS

Be Sickle Smart is a national campaign aimed at raising awareness about Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and the dangers associated with this inherited disease, including Iron Overload.
