Why are Millennial Women Suffering from Burn out at Work by age 30?

A recent Forbes journal stated that, “It seems relaxation is something Millennial women have never experienced. One reason that women are burning out early in their careers is that they have simply reached their breaking point after spending their childhoods developing well-rounded resumes. “These women worked like crazy in school, and in college, and then they get into the workforce and they are exhausted,” says Melanie Shreffler of the youth marketing blog Ypulse“.

I realize that “most of us have to work to survive, but all of us have to work if we are to become whole”. I find that work builds a certain amount of  character and a sense of accomplishment for growth. My beliefs is that regardless of what we do in life we can find positivity in it. Its sometimes just a matter of how we perceive something ‘Is the glass half empty or half full?’

Just as there are people who are more likely to be infected with a certain disease, there are other types of people who are more likely to burn out. ” In order to suffer from burnout,” says Elliot Aronson, professor of social psychology at the University of California, “you must first be on fire.” So those prone to burn out are afire with high goals and ideals. It is said that those who suffer burnout are often a company’s best people. I agree with him 100%, reflecting on my own personal experiences.

Professor Fumiaki Inaoka of the Japanese Red Cross College of Nursing, wrote in the book, Moetsukishokogun (Burnout Syndrome): “Those who are inclined to burn out have a strong tendencies to be sympathetic, human, delicate, dedicated, and idealistic. They are not machine oriented but ‘human oriented,’ so to speak.”

I find that most people experience burnout when they realize they are not achieving the sometimes unattainable goals they have set for themselves. The book Helplessness by Martin E.P. Seligman pointed to the unbridled individualism seen in the West as a cause for the increase in depression today, and he expressed the need for finding a meaning in life. He then showed that “one necessary condition for meaning is the attachment to something higher that you are”. Although many people today do not take their relationship with God seriously, communication with the Creator-who is certainly “larger than you are” – can help you to cope with feelings of helplessness.
